WAPDA Union Plans Train March & Dharna
HYDERABAD, March 9, 2011: Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Central Labour Union president Abdul Latif Nizamani has warned that thousands of Wapda employees from all over the country will stage a train march and a sit-in outside the parliament house in Islamabad on April 6 if the government does not rescind its decision to privatise Wapda and its distribution companies.
The sit-in would continue and not be called off until and unless the government categorically announced that Wapda and its distribution companies would not be privatised, he said while speaking to newly-elected officebearers of different wings of the union at the Labour Hall.
He said that Wapda, a public utility organisation, was on the verge of collapse because of wrong policies of the government, “commission” mafia and non-payment of dues by different government departments and organisations.
Mr Nizamani said that no power plant had so far been privatised. As a first step, the government had intended to privatise Lakhra power plant but the union challenged the move before apex court and its decision was pending.
He said that the government had planned to disband Pepco last year but dropped the plan following union’s protest and now it had announced privatisation of generation and distribution companies.
