Rawalpindi(Wednesday, October 12, 2011) – Large number of Wapda/Iesco employees staged a protest demonstration against proposed privatisation of powerhouses by the government and price hike.
The procession led by Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Central Labour Union Chairman Mian Rehman Ghani, general secretary, Javed Iqbal Baloch, vice chairman, Khalil Ashraf and joint secretary Mohammad Ashfaq was taken out from Rawalpindi Press Club.
The angry protesters carrying placards and banners in their hands raised anti-government slogans against the proposed plan of privatisation of power units. They also lashed the government for making the lives of people miserable through unprecedented price hike in the country.
The protesters blocked the Benazir Bhutto Road in front of Jang/The News building, resulting in the blockade of traffic from Liaquat Bagh to Mareer Hassan Chowk for about 30 minutes. Speaking on the occasion, Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Central Labour Union Chairman Mian Rehman Ghani hit hard the government for adopting wrong policies, which were against the interest of the Wapda/Iesco workers. The government in order to enforce its plan has started working on it which include privatisation of power distribution companies. This is not acceptable to us at any cost, he clearly announced.
Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Central Labour Union General Secretary Javed Iqbal Baloch in his fiery speech condemned the government for its failure to control the present price hike in the country.
Instead of taking measures for controlling the menace of price hike, prices of commodities are increased enormously after every second day. Additional burden is put on the people through price hike, he alleged.
