AIOU Employees Strike – Academic Staff Association urges agitating workers to remain peaceful
Islamabad (Tuesday, June 26, 2012) – Academic Staff Association (ASA) of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has urged the university’s agitating workers to remain peaceful and resolve their problems through talks.
The ASA, in a resolution adopted at an emergency meeting here on Tuesday, said that the violent attitude by some workers, who are on strike for the last one week, will not be in their interest, rather it will be damaging for the university’s good reputation.
They condemned the trend of using abusive language against senior academic
staff (professors) during the strike.
Addressing the meeting, ASA President Professor Dr. Syed Zafar Ilyas and General Secretary Dr. Muhammad Ajmal hoped that the demands of workers would be settled down through negotiations, for which Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Nazir Ahmed Sangi had already constituted a five-member committee.
The ASA called for implementing recommendations of the Residence Allotment Committee to facilitate workers. It also demanded increase in the PHD allowance to Rs9,750, and filling the vacant posts of teachers through advertisement.
The Academic Staff Association also called for improving the existing medical facilities for academic staff by including Shifa International, Aga Khan Hospital, Combined Military Hospital and Military Hospital on the university’s panel. In case of emergency, medical treatment should be allowed in any of these hospitals.
It also demanded that the academic staff having PhD degrees should be promoted to the next grade.
The Academic Staff Association also adopted a separate resolution expressing solidarity with teachers of the
Sindh University who were dismissed by the administration.
