LAHORE, March 28: Nankana Sahib District Police Officer Shehzad Waheed allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself in the temple at his official residence on Monday morning.
Reports said the police high-ups concerned tried to contact Mr Waheed time and again on his cell phone in connection with official work, but there was no response from the officer. At last they directed the on-duty staff to personally contact the DPO.
The staff reaching the DPO residence knocked at the door of his room and on finding no response informed the police officers concerned about the situation.
The officers on opening the door found Mr Waheed lying in a pool of blood with a bullet wound in his temple.
Some family dispute was said to be the cause of the extreme step taken by Mr Waheed, a senior police officer told Dawn requesting not to be named.
He said Waheed of Kamoke committed suicide at 9am while his staff came to know about the matter two hours after the incident.
The officer said the DPO was not enjoying good relations with his wife who left his official residence some hours before the incident.
“He shot himself in the temple with his 9mm official pistol which he was holding in his hand when his body was found,” he said, adding the police had taken the pistol in custody and handed over the body to the family after autopsy.
The policemen deputed for security at the deceased’s official residence told the highups they did not hear any gunshot.
One of the police guards requesting anonymity said he was aware of the DPO’s strained relations but he kept silent because of the security protocol.
Sheikhupura range DIG Rai Altaf has constituted a team to probe into the matter.
