Wednesday, December 16, 2015 – A Joint Parliamentary Committee has been formed to discuss privatization of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). I may submit a request for consideration of this committee regarding plight of PTCL employees/pensioners deprived of their legitimate rights after privatization. In recent times, the government and the PIA management have made visible strides to restore the past glory of the Airline which has suffered much during the past years due to faulty aviation policies and vested interests in prime positions.

While the nation was looking forward to enjoy a rejuvenated national airline, the process to sell it out with all its newly refurbished fleet and systems, is underway. The government claims that no employee will be laid off after privatization and the rights of the employees will be protected but we had an adverse experience. PTCL pensioners getting lesser increase than that announced by the Government of Pakistan despite the guarantee of the government decided in Share Purchase Agreement. Government of Pakistan Telecom Re-organization Act, 1996 is being violated by not allowing these benefits.

These pensioners are striving for their rights for last six years and despite clear verdicts from High Courts as well as Supreme Court of Pakistan, the government is reluctant to pay these rights to these elderly people. The Joint Parliamentary Committee is requested to also keep in mind the plight of the PTCL employees after the privatization of their parent organization, before taking a decision on the privatization of the national flag carrier, i.e. PIA
