Sindh High Court Notice of Non-payment of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Employees Salaries

Karachi (Daily TheNews Lahore / Saturday, January 5, 2013) – Chief justice (CJ) of Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday took notice of the non-payment of salaries of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) employees, and issued notices to the chief secretary and the local bodies secretary for an explanation.

Through its counsel Nadeem Sheikh, the KMC workers union filed an application saying that thousands of employees, including staffers of the fire brigade, had not been given their pay for the last two to three months.

The counsel noted that the chief minister had announced that the provincial government would release Rs850.21 million every month for the payment of the salaries of KMC employees, but it had not been doing so for the past two to three months without any reason.

He said that due to negligence on the part of the government thousands of employees were facing hardships and unable to bear their monthly expenses. He prayed to the court to take notice of the non-payment of salaries and direct the government to ensure that the employees, including pensioners, were paid within the stipulated time.

Chief Justice Mushir Alam converted the application into a petition, issued notices to the chief secretary and the local bodies secretary, and called their comments on January 10, 2013.
