PWD daily-wage workers seek release of salaries
RAWALPINDI, Dec 22: Workers union here on Wednesday stage a protest rally against non-payment of salaries to daily-wage staffers of the Public Works Department’s (PWD) building section.
The rally was organised by All Pakistan PWD Zonal Workers Union which commenced from Saddar and ended at the Punjab House. The protesters claimed that over 1,000 daily-wage workers had not received salaries for the last four months.
The rally was led by Pakistan Workers Federation General Secretary Usama Tariq and was attended by hundreds of protesters who blocked traffic on Benazir Bhutto Road. The protesters raised slogans against the Punjab government which they claimed was keeping mum about the plight of the poor employees for the last four months.
“A daily wage employee gets Rs 6, 000 monthly salary with which he looks after his entire family in this time of price-hike. We demand of the Punjab government to immediately release salaries of daily wage staff or tender resignation for its failure to run the government,” the rally’s leader, Usama Tariq, told the gathering outside Punjab House.
He said the Punjab government had violated Payment of Wages Act by not paying salaries to the employees for the last four months, adding that the daily wage employees had been serving the building department for the last 10 years but never faced such a situation in the past.
Speakers on the occasion threatened that daily wage employees in the Punjab would boycott their respective offices in case their salaries were not released immediately.
