Punjab will recruit 500 additional SHOs in police department
Islamabad (Daily TheNews Lahore / Tariq Butt / Monday, September 2, 2013) – Punjab government plans to recruit 500 Sub Inspectors (SI) through the provincial Public Service Commission (PPSC), who would be appointed as Additional Station House Officers (ASHOs).
“The infusion of fresh blood will help change the police culture, which is a huge bane for the people, who are condemned to visit the police stations in connection with different cases,” a senior official told The News.
Certainly, he said, these SIs will be young men, who will bring about a change in the police force, which is too notorious for being dominated by the tough old guard. The official said the influence of political figures and lawmakers of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) or any of its allied parties in the recruitment process is ruled out because the SIs will be selected by the PPSC through its tight system of written examination, interview and fitness.
It is generally accepted that inductions through the federal or provincial public service commissions are transparent and above board, and merit is strictly observed. At present, only three cadres – Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP), Assistant SIs and constables – are employed in the police force. There is no direct induction of the SIs or any other cadre. Not only Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif but every successive administration has vigorously talked about ending the despicable police culture, but everybody did little in this connection.
The result is that people continue to suffer heavily, and are always scared of approaching police for help and redress of their grievances and complaints. All the time they have to bribe police if they don’t have the right connections to scare cops.
In his last budget, Shahbaz Sharif announced a number of measures to maintain law and order including recruitment of 500 SIs, who, he said, will help implement the government policy of transformation of Thana culture
