Protest in Multan – NCHD staff vows to continue protest
MULTAN (July 24, 2011) : The protest of hundreds of the employees of National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) entered the second month against the proposed closure of primary education institutions and rendering more than 16,000 employee serving in 144 districts of the country and to deprive millions of children of under privileged areas from primary education and millions of adults to be literate through functional literacy program. More than 100 parliamentarians signed resolution for supporting NCHD’s continuation. NCHD employees have also filed a constitution petition in the Supreme Court under Article 184(3) for the enforcement of the fundamental rights but two provincial Governments of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are reluctant to continue this programme. The employees of National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) Multan Chapter on Sunday vowed to continue their protest till an assurance by the government for protection of their jobs. The employees have been on the protest and sit-in in front of the Parliament House for the last one-month. The protestors holding placards and banners called for safeguarding the efforts and resources of NCHD spent during last eight years for the promotion of primary education, literacy and primary health care. The closure of NCHD will affect 16,000 employees and their families in 144 districts but also deprive millions of children in under privileged areas from primary education and millions of adults to be literate through functional literacy program.The employees said the provincial governments should adopt NCHD with its full scale in their respective provinces and if these are reluctant to adopt the matter should be resolved by the federal government. Though, Minister for Religious Affairs Syed Khurshid Shah has assured the employees that he will discuss the matter with Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani. While Secretary Information Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Qamar Zaman Kaira also expressed solidarity with the employees of NCHD.The official informed that the provinces including Balochistan, Gilgit Baltistan and Sindh have come up with their consent over continuing the functionality of National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) and accepting its employees with the demand from federal government to provide the funds. However, the provinces including Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are yet to give their input regarding acceptance of NCHD. The officials of NCHD are also lobbying in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to prepare the provincial authorities for adopting the employees of NCHD, he said.
