Young doctors (YDA) continue strike in 3rd day:
Rawalpindi (Friday, March 4, 2011): During last three days, over 10,000 patients had to suffer badly because of a strike held by young doctors in outpatient departments of the allied hospitals demanding 100 per cent pay raise, however, the provincial government has not yet given any response on the issue.
On Thursday too, the young doctors did not serve in the OPDs at Benazir Bhutto Hospital, Holy Family Hospital and DHQ Hospital properly, however, Intensive Care Units, Coronary Care Units and Emergency Departments of the three hospitals remained operational as per routine.
“Young doctors observed complete strike from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at BBH OPD however, in DHQ Hospital and HFH, the OPDs worked from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m.,” said Young Doctors Association Chairman Dr. Muhammad Haroon while talking to ‘The News’ Thursday. He added that the 48-hours deadline given to the government for issuance of notification regarding 100 per cent increase in salaries of young doctors passed off (on Thursday), ‘and now we have decided to continue strike in the OPDs of hospitals across the province till Saturday.”
Young doctors have been on strike for three days on the call of YDA Punjab that is resulting in partial closure of OPDs in allied hospitals that collectively accommodate over 4000 patients daily on average.
The YDA termed the behaviour of the concerned government officials and leadership of the ruling PML (N) non serious on the subject. “We have been assured of the pay raise by Punjab CM, central leadership of the PML (N) and high-ups of the provincial health department, but the cold response from them belied their tall claims,” said Dr Haroon.
The dialogue of YDA with government started on January 10 this year when YDA office-bearers met with Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif and pay raise was assured, however, the government has not issued any notification to this effect. Also on February 4, PML (N) MNA Muhammad Hanif Abbasi expressed to ‘The News’ that he had recommended 100 per cent pay raise for the young doctors.
To a query, Dr. Haroon said that young doctors would wait for the government’s response and continue strike in OPDs of the hospitals across the province till Saturday. “If the government does not issue notification regarding pay raise, the YDA would announce further course of action on Monday.”
