Quetta: Police Firing & Shelling on Doctors Rally, 11 wounded, 72 arrested
QUETTA (Tuesday, June 14, 2011) : Several protesting doctors incurred injuries after poilce fired shells at them in Quetta on Tuesday. Several doctors were detained.
Members of Young Doctors Association (YDA) took out a rally from Quetta’s Sendiman Hospital to press for their demands for pay raise and other benefits.
The protestors wanted to stage a sit-in in front of the Chief Minister House. The plan was thwarted by police, who stopped the demonstrators, resulting in a clash.
Later, police opened fire and shells at the doctors, leaving 11 of them injured.
Several doctors were detained and shifted to police stations.
The injured doctors present at the Civil Hospital said that their protest was peaceful.
Referring to other provinces, where doctors’ demands were accepted, they said that protest would continue. SAMAA
