“In this regard, the Pakistan Medical Association is taking various doctors’ organisations, including Young Doctors Association (YDA), Punjab Doctors Association (PDA) and Medical Teachers Association (MTA) into confidence,” said PMA office-bearers Dr Ashraf Nizami, Dr Tanveer Anwar, Dr Izhar Chaudhry, Dr Akhtar Rashid Malik, Dr Ehsan-ur-Rehman, Dr Kamran Saeed, Dr Salman Kazmi, Dr Khalid Chaudhry during a press conferences held at Pakistan Medical Association House here on Monday.

The PMA has called a provincial convention on March 28, 2011, in which all organisations of doctors from other provinces would participate for the demand of a special salary package for doctors.
The Pakistan Medical Association had already conveyed to the government that a special salary package for the HOs, PGs, MOs, SRs, teaching cadre, specialists, general and administrative cadre was required to stop the brain drain.
However it was expected that the government will raise the pay of only one class of doctors minimally in the young doctors to divide the doctor community and doctors will not accept it.
The Pakistan Medical Association demanded that all vacant seats of grade 17 to grade 20 especially 4,000 medical officers’ seats should be filled on priority through the Punjab Public Service Commission and also promote the specialists, SMOs and regular assistant professors to stop the brain drain.
A group of doctors was planning for strike to get a minimal salary raise for only one class of doctors and had not consulted or taken into confidence any other association/PMA on it.
PMA has invited all organizations of doctors to be a part of their national protest movement for a special pay package of doctors.
‘Call by doctors illegal’: Punjab Parliamentary Secretary on Health Dr Saeed Elahi has said that the strike call given by a group of doctors is unconstitutional, illegal and against the principles of Islam as it will endanger the life of patients and bring a bad name to the noble profession of medicine.
According to a handout here on Monday, Dr Saeed Elahi said this while talking to a representative delegation of the Pakistan Medical Association, Medical Teachers Association, General Practitioners Association and Young Doctors Association led by Dr Akhtar Rashid, Dr Tehsin Riaz, Dr Shahbaz Khan, Dr Riaz Hussain and Dr Faisal Baig. He said that doctors enjoyed respect in society and government highly valued their services.
